How We Work With Wood

Our approach begins with understanding that wood is not a static material. It moves with humidity changes, ages with exposure to light, and develops character over time. Successful woodworking means anticipating these behaviors and building accordingly.

We source our timber from sustainable Canadian forests, selecting boards individually for grain orientation and figure. Much of our stock is air-dried for years before entering the shop, ensuring stability that kiln-dried lumber cannot match.

Hand tools and machinery both have their place. We use power equipment for dimensioning and repetitive tasks, but critical operations like fitting joints and final surfacing are done by hand. You can see the difference in how light plays across a hand-planed surface.

What Guides Our Work

Every project teaches something new. Wood varies even within the same board, and conditions in our shop change with the seasons. Experience helps us anticipate problems, but it never eliminates the need for careful observation and adjustment.

We don't believe in shortcuts. Proper joinery takes time. Finishing cannot be rushed. When a client asks how long something will take, our answer depends on the complexity of the work, not arbitrary deadlines.

Our workshop operates on the principle that quality compounds. A well-prepared surface takes finish better. Tight joints remain tight. Properly dried lumber stays dimensionally stable. Each step influences everything that follows.

Core Competencies

Joinery Techniques

Mortise and tenon, dovetails, sliding dovetails, bridle joints, and traditional frame and panel construction. We select joinery based on the mechanical stresses each piece will face.

Finish Application

Oil finishes, varnishes, shellac, and specialized coatings. Surface preparation accounts for eighty percent of a successful finish. We understand that and act accordingly.

Wood Movement

Designing for seasonal expansion and contraction prevents cracking and warping. Our constructions allow wood to move without fighting its natural behavior.

Species Selection

Different woods suit different applications. We match species to use cases based on hardness, stability, workability, and appearance. Function dictates choice.

We don't take on every project that comes through the door. Our capacity is limited, and we prefer working on pieces where our specific skills make a difference. That selectivity allows us to maintain standards.

Warranty and support continue after delivery. Wood furniture requires occasional maintenance, and we provide guidance on care. If issues arise, we address them. Standing behind our work is not optional.
